When the early settlers homesteaded the West Virginia Country side it was customary to have a house that sat to the back of the home that stored the food the family grew during the summer. By the time winter came, folks would have big bins of potatoes, apples, turnips, and carrots overflowing by shelves full of canned vegetables, pickles, and apple butter. Upstairs of the Cellar House, the family would store dried herbs and beans and perhaps a few tobacco leaves. Some families would use the top room to smoke and store meats for the winter too. Guests can also experience the sights and sounds of the country as they listen to the nearby stream, try out the rustic outhouse, gaze at the stars, or hike up the trail located at the back of the field.
